ABC NewsFebruary Board and Officers' Meeting and Member Meeting Posted Tuesday, February 13, 2007 by Jim Britt

The revised bylaws were approved by the Board and will be posted later. The President, Jim Britt, nominated Tim Vahsholtz to an open position on the Board and the nomination was seconded by Monty Cole.

We discussed sharing the Christmas party expenses with the other clubs that were present. Treasurer Denise Cole will notfiy them of their shares. Denise will deliver a financial report at the next meeting.

We will renew our membership in the League of American Cyclists and look into their insurance policy.

There was discussion on attracting new members. Coreen Frasier will be leading a ride that should attract beginners on Saturday, Feb. 17 in conjunction with the opening of the new trolley line to the Clinton
Library. The ride will begin at Heifer International, 10:00 AM. We have a flier for that ride to be passed out at the local bicycle shops and to the riders that day. Jim Britt will work on a permanent ABC flier to have at the bike shops. He is asking for good pictures from members to use. We will have riders for both beginners and advanced riders in March and April and have drinks and maps on those rides (welcoming rides). Monty Cole is working on the details. Jim and Monty are working on ABC decals and having decals to add for “25 in 3,” “50 in 5,” and “100 miler” strips to add to the decal. We will advertise some rides as training rides for the Big Dam Bridge 100 mile ride in September.

The Board and officers discussed sending a delegate to the Bike Summit but decided against it due to uncertain ABC income and web site expenses. There was general support for BACA's activities. A reminder was made to register as a member on-line if you haven’t yet this year. Ian Hope, webmaster, reported that the on-line process is easy and very secure.

The Pre-Prediction Ride was set for Sunday, 6/10 and the Prediction Ride for Saturday, 6/16 and other event rides for 2007 were announced...

3/31 Tour de Cure (Murray Park)
5/5? Tour de Toad (Conway)
6/9 Tour de Rock (Burns Park)
8/18 Tour de Valley (Russellville)
8/26 Hotter n Hell (Wichita Falls, TX)
9/8-9 MS 150 (Petit Jean State Park)
9/30 Big Dam Bridge Ride

A Lance Armstrong Foundation fund-raising ride was proposed by Monty Cole and the concept was approved by the Board. He proposed having a long ride around central Arkansas and stopping for fund raising at towns along the way. More information will follow.

The Share to Road license plate concept was discussed for both bicycle riders and runners. Monty will continue working on the application and design and will report later.

Ian is working on getting the rest of the ABC money ($2500) that was from the BDB ride.

An Arkie 100 ride was discussed for 2008. It is a way to get riders to join the club. No decision was made.

ABC February General Member Meeting

Tim Vahsholtz was elected by the general membership to the Board of Directors. He will serve through 2009. President Jim Britt presented Ian Hope with a plaque of appreciation for his service to the Club as president in 2006 and continuing as webmaster. Ian presented a rogram on the new ABC website. The next meeting will be a Pasta Jack’s Restaurant again with a proposed program on bicycle lights.

EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES WITH BACA

There are lots of activities coming up through June and lots of chances to be part of them. Check'em out...

BIKE TO WORK DAY, MAY 18, 2007:

Morning commute to work, Maumelle or West Little Rock to Downtown Little Rock and exercise for the day all in 40 minutes? You can do it on your bicycle. This year will be BACA’s sixth annual bike to work day event. The bike to work day event showcases the utility of the bicycle and its usefulness to run errands, get to work and get physically fit.
Volunteers for this event are being recruited now. There’s lots of ways to participate. Be a bike buddy, hand out fruit, donate prizes, or plan the event the way you think it should be planned. BACA has the resources!

BIKE SAFETY RODEOS:
The Bicycle Safety Rodeo is coming to town and Bicycle Advocacy of Central Arkansas is there with three from which to choose - Little Rock, North Little Rock and Saline County. Planning and preparation are going on now. Volunteers are needed. If you have a passion for safe cycling and want to share it with the kids, then this is where you need to be. The events will be held on three different Saturdays in May or June. Contact Ron Rizzardi at rrizzardi@comcast.net or 771-1147 if you are interested. Please help make these events a success.

DON’T FORGET: The March 1st BACA meeting will feature speakers from Central Arkansas Transit about the exciting news concerning bike racks on CAT buses. Also the annual BACA meeting for election of officers and Board members will be April 6, 2007 at 7:00 pm. at the Oyster Bar. Plan to be there. Plan to vote.

ABC NewsDog on Garrison Road alert...again! Posted Saturday, February 10, 2007 by Ian Hope

I wanted to alert those who routinely ride Garrison Road (e.g., Pinnacle to Ferndale route) about a particularly vicious dog. This is a BIG s.o.b., and on Wednesday (2/7/07) he came out into the road on both my outbound and return trips, cutting off my path, barking, snarling, and making a lunge at me. The yard where he stays is at 6110 Garrison, and it has a gate that appears to be open (covered by only a towel) so that he can run into the road whenever he wants. He looks a little bit like a golden retriever, but heavyset with very thick shoulders/neck.

This comes from Steve Barger who recently witnessed this mean dog up close and personal. Be careful if you are out there riding.
