ABC NewsBikes for Tykes Work dates from Monty Posted Friday, November 30, 2007 by Jim Britt

1. Date For Volunteers: Our two nights for cleaning and repairing bikes will be Wednesday, Dec. 12th and Tuesday, Dec. 18th. If you can volunteer to help out on either or both of these nights let me know. We will be working from about 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm at Chainwheel. There will be soft drinks and pizza for the volunteers.

2. Bikes Needed: We really need some nice bikes for the project- ones we can simply clean or easily service. Please ask around work, around your neighborhood at Church, etc. to see if anyone has old bikes that their children have outgrown or longer use. It is surprising how many good bikes are just lying around peoples garages. It is not cost effective to try and repair bikes that have extensive damage or require major parts replacements. Bikes can be taken by Chainwheel.

If you can help out or have any questions- drop me a note or give me a call:

Thanks for your help and support with this project.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know- we need space for up to 10-15 people, trainers, etc.

ABC NewsNovember 2007 ABC meeting minutes Posted Wednesday, November 21, 2007 by Jim Britt

About 20 members were present at Pasta Jack’s when president Jim Britt called the meeting to order.

We then opened the floor to discuss several exciting group organized bike rides:

A ride this Saturday organized by Ian and Holly Hope to benefit the Pulaski Humane Socitety. The ride is called the Ride for Noses and begins at 9:00 am at the Ferndale/Kanis parking lot. The group will ride to the Humane Society. A $10.00 or more donation is very much appreciated. This will be around a 30 mile loop.

Ian is also planning a Natchez Trace ride with training rides to help. You can learn more about the trail through your favorite search engine. At this time, the ride will go from Knowville, Tennessee to Gulf National Park. They are planning at least 3 days on these surfaced roads.

Another fun ride will be the Jingle Bells Arthritis run. It is on Saturday, December 1st. Contact Coreen Frazier for details.

Our program for this meeting was given by Mr. Russell Oaks. He told of his journey to the Dayton Ohio Trail, which is part of the Southwest Ohio Trail system. He also provided us with detailed maps of this trail and the Great Miami River Recreation Trail. If interested, more info can be obtained at www.miamivallytrails.org.

On December 7th and 8th, Willa will conduct another of the very interesting Rd Bike I classes.

Our club event in December will be our club Christmas party. Check our ABC site for details.

In January, our speaker will be a representative from Orbea bicycles.

Respectfully submitted,

Jamie Hazlewood

ABC NewsBikes for Tykes News from Monty Posted Wednesday, November 21, 2007 by Jim Britt

Dear Members and Friends:

It’s hard to believe that another year is drawing to a close and that Christmas is quickly approaching. We all recognized how fortunate we are to have the ability, money and time to ride our bikes and to pursue our passion for the sport of cycling.

Every year around this time, our friends at Chainwheel bike shop (www.chainwheel.com), with assistance from the Arkansas Bicycle Club, hosts the Bike For Tykes bicycle donation program. As a part of this program, we obtain used serviceable bikes for donation to several charitable organizations. After receiving the bikes, volunteers from our cycling community help clean and perform minor servicing on the bikes. As always, we need your help to make this program a success. Specifically, we need the following:

1. We need bicycle donations. We will accept bikes of all sizes and types. The bikes should be in serviceable condition, although we can perform basic repairs, adjustments, tire/tube replacements, grip replacements, cleaning and lubrication. A trained mechanic will be on hand to make any complicated repairs and to perform a final safety check on each bike. Of course, we would welcome new bikes also. Donated bikes can be taken to Chainwheel, located at, 10300 Rodney Parham Rd., Little Rock, AR 72227. (501-224-7651) Bike donations make a great office or church project- please let us know how you can help.

2. We need six to ten volunteers on two different nights to assist with cleaning and adjusting the bikes. You do not need to have mechanical skills- just a desire to help out and not mind the smell of a little green cleaner (you may actually start to like the smell after a few hours!)

We do not have an exact date yet, but we anticipate starting within the next two weeks- meeting on one Tuesday and one Thursday night. The work will be performed at Chainwheel. Food and drinks will be provided for the volunteers.

I’m sure many of us remember the magic of finding a bicycle under the Christmas tree when were kids (any maybe even as adults!) Now it is our turn to help spread that magic to deserving children in our own community. Thanks in advance for your help making this years BFT program a success. We will post the exact dates soon.

Best wishes and hope you have a safe and happy holiday season,

Monty Cole

ABC NewsFund Rasier bike ride for the Pulaski County Humane Society Posted Tuesday, November 6, 2007 by Ian Hope

The first annual (?) "Ride for the Noses" to benefit the Pulaski County Humane Society.

In light of the recent events at the Humane Society, we will be doing a fund raising ride to collect money for the Humane Society of Pulaski County.

The Arkansas Bicycle Club is sponsoring a ride this Saturday, November 10th, 2007 to benefit the Humane Society of Pulaski County. The offices of the Humane Society were vandalized and a vehicle stolen recently and we are rallying the troops to help. They perform a very valuable service for the community and it has a direct effect on cyclists. How you say? The Humane Society provides shelter for stray and neglected animals throughout the county but the main impact to cyclists is that they spay and neuter animals. Why is that important to us? It reduces that number of dogs that run out at us. See. It does effect you.

Name- Ride for the Noses

Date- Saturday, October 10th, 2007

Time- On the wheels at 9:00 am

Meeting Place- Intersection of Ferndale and Kanis Roads

Distance- approx a 30 mile loop

Fees- We are asking for a minimum $10.00 donation for the Humane Society of Pulaski County. Bring cash or a check made out to the Humane Society, not the ABC. Of course you can donate as much as you like, don’t stop at $10.00.

We will meet and ride to the Humane Society office and make the donation there and then make a loop ride back to the starting point. This will be a no drop ride so all riders are welcome however you should be aware that it is an open road course and we will not have police support.

Contact me for more info or directions to the start at Ian Hope or phone me at 501-374-6534. Feel free to forward this everyone you know. They do not have to be an ABC member to ride and donate.

Hope to see you there.
