Bike with a Ranger, Sat. 6/13/09, 2:30 PM Posted Thursday, June 11, 2009 by Jim Britt
BIKE WITH A RANGER!
Summer Guided Bicycle Tours
Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site Park Rangers will lead a bike tour along the Trail of Tears on the Arkansas River Trail on Saturday, June 13th at 2:30p.m., weather permitting. The tour will begin on the Arkansas River Trail by the Trail of Tears exhibits in Riverfront Park (The entrance is near the Dickey-Stephens Field in North Little Rock).
Park Rangers will speak about the origin of the Trail of Tears, methods of travel, conditions during removal, and slavery on the trail in Arkansas. The Trail of Tears is a trail that follows several routes via land and water. The Little Rock and North Little Rock site was a major stop during the removal of American Indians from the east to what is now Oklahoma. This site is unique in that a majority of the removed tribes camped in the area until transportation across the Arkansas River could be secured.
Historical themes surrounding the Trail of Tears in Arkansas run parallel to human rights injustices found within the story of the 1957 desegregation crisis at Central High School.
The tour is approximately 6 miles. Please note that a portion of the tour follows a route along city streets, so participants need to be at least 13 year old and able to ride with minimal traffic. Participants need to bring their own bicycles, helmets, and water. Riders under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
For more information, or if inclement weather is in the forecast, please contact Laura Miller at (501) 374-1947 or Laura_A_Miller@nps.gov.
