Spread the Word... Posted Monday, June 28, 2010 by Sprokets
On Tuesday night the Pulaski County Quorum Court unanimously passed an ordinance to ban livestock and exotic animals from Pulaski County bridges built for pedestrians and cyclists. This includes both the BDB and the bridge under construction over Little Maumelle River between the south bank and Two Rivers Park. This is a turnaround from last month’s meeting when 9 justices voted to table the ordinance. Some of the change can be attributed to the work of Bicycle Advocacy of Central AR, AR Bicycle Club, CARP and the BDB Foundation.
But the cycling community was warned by one of the J.P.’s that if cyclists become a hazard (because of excess speed) there will be an additional ordinance prohibiting bicycles on the bridge or requiring cyclists to walk their bicycles across. It is important that the cycling community spread the word we must maintain a reasonable speed when coming off the bridge. One collision between a speeding cyclist and a small child could be the catalyst for additional Quorum Court action.

Remembering Marilyn Fulper.... Posted Tuesday, June 22, 2010 by Sprokets
As most may have heard by now, the Central Arkansas cycling community and Bicycle Advocacy of Central Arkansas (BACA) lost a dear friend and an active member Sunday morning when Marilyn Fulper, aged 56, was killed by a motorist running a red light at the intersection of Cantrell Road/Highway 10 and River Mountain Road. She was a nurse at UAMS, an active BACA member, and also an active team player with the Mello Velo cycling group supporting last week's Tour de Rock ride. She leaves two children, a grieving family, and a host of mourning friends behind.
A rosary will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church on Thursday, June 24th, at 7pm. A funeral mass will be held at Holy Souls Catholic Church on Friday, June 25th, at 2pm. Additional details will be in her obituary, scheduled to run in Wednesday's Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
Flowers may be sent on her behalf to North Little Rock Funeral Home, on Main Street in North Little Rock. Marilyn's family has requested that a memorial fund for bicycling outreach and education be established in her memory. BACA will establish an account for this purpose. Contributions may be mailed to BACA, ATTN: Marilyn Fulper Memorial Fund, PO Box 55677, Little Rock, AR 72115, or you may contact Don Bearden, BACA Treasurer, at don.bearden@regions.com.
A Ghost Bike will be placed near the accident site (Cantrell/Highway 10 and River Moutain Road), Wednesday, at 6pm in Marilyn's memory. Parking will be available nearby, along side River Mountain Road. The group will meet at American Pie on Maumelle Blvd. afterwards, at approximately 6:30-6:45pm. Please feel free to come there even if you cannot make the Ghost Bike placement.
It really, really hurts to lose a friend for family member like this. I remember Marilyn as a conscientious, safety-minded cyclist. She had taken not only the League traffic safety class, but also the commuting and group riding classes. But as I found out the hard way myself earlier this year, sometimes, despite every precaution you take, bad things can happen because of the carelessness of other drivers. You must always be vigilant to the traffic around you to try and minimize these sorts of surprises.
The Scriptures tell us that "to every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heavens." Now is certainly a time to weep, and to mourn our lost friend, to embrace her memory and care for her family and friends. Soon will come a time to heal, as well as a time to speak out... in Marilyn's memory for safer road and street conditions in our community, and for equitable treatment for all travelers on our roadways, in our communities, and our justice system.
Only a month ago we observed the Ride of Silence, in memory of those riders who have gone on; please remember our friend Marilyn, and her dream of a better state, and a better world for bikers.

Livestock Meeting - Tuesday, June 22 Posted Saturday, June 19, 2010 by Sprokets
The decision on banning livestock on the BDB is at the Pulaski Quorum Court meeting Tuesday, June 22, 7:00 PM at the County Offices, around 2nd and Broadway, LR. Come out to support passing this motion to ban horses, etc from the bridge. It was a big mess when they were on the bridge last time. This item should be the first on the agenda. I know we will have some riders there to show support, so join them. Apparently there were some horse supporters last time. I know there are more bicyclists than horse owners who want to use the bridge, so come out.
